MARFA — Joe Cashiola’s Wave 1: Discovery will open on June 21, 8 p.m. at MAINTENANT as a celebration of Litha, midsummer and the summer solstice. Parking for the event will be on the roads —1908 Antelope Hills Rd. or on 1825 Rabbits Rd. A film will follow at 10 p.m.

“I’ve been doing steel work in Marfa for nearly 15 years; this is an idea I’ve been carrying for about five,” Cashiola said. “It’s inspired by the ranch gates and similar signs at the thresholds of the region, simple and elegant in their own way. I fabricated a set of seven large objects –– at first gateways or portals, later arranging themselves like a tarot card deck. Two years ago I started the Gateway tapes from the Monroe Institute, and the tapes offered some clarity about these objects, which are more magical than artistic for me.”
The 22-minute film that will also be shown is “an 11-year project in the making inspired by the 1937 book Starmaker by Olaf Stapledon,” Cashiola said. “The film is something of an opera about experiences in layered worlds.”
