Dear Editor:
In the News In Brief last week, there was a piece from the U.S. Attorney’s Office about a retired Army member helping undocumented immigrants for profit. In the title, and in the body of the article, the immigrants are termed “illegal aliens.” No person is illegal. And these humans are earthlings, not aliens. Please let’s keep awake and mindful as we continue to navigate these confusing times.

Many thanks to Jeff Davis County Library for the excellent recent program: “How Mountain Birds are Responding to Climate Change” by Eric Iverson, Ph.D. candidate at UT Austin. Afterwards Friends of the Library hosted a reception.
How fortunate we are to have superb Library Director Erin Ray and her fine staff, a dedicated Friends of the Library volunteer board, county judge and commissioners who support our library, a fine maintenance staff, and library volunteers.
Get your kids away from screens this summer — take ‘em to the library! To enrich the community, our wonderful library, and the libraries in Marfa and Alpine, have many free resources — not just books, audiobooks, and DVDs. Including weekly storytime for kids, notary service, interlibrary loan, senior fitness classes, a bookclub, adult watercolor paint classes, Spanish books for children & adults, desktop computers with WiFi, a Virtual Connection Room for private telehealth appointments, and items to checkout such as a food dehydrator, reel mower, Blu-Ray player, board games, and more.
Also new interactive learning games for kids. Plus, at the library read all three of our area newspapers, and peruse the latest issues of magazines such as Sky & Telescope, Texas Monthly, and Consumer Reports. There’s recent talk of a weekly Spanish storytime for kids if the library can enlist a few volunteers to help get it started. Call the library at 432-426-3802 or visit in person M-F 9-5 and Sat 10-2.
