The Marfa Studio of Forts handiwork draws a lot of curiosity from passersby.

MARFA –– Denizens and transients rolling through Marfa over the month of June may have noticed that an ambitiously tall defensive structure has been erected in front of the radio station building at 106 San Antonio Street.

This building –– a fort –– has been the work of the Marfa School of Forts, an art and architectural project led by Sam Dwyer and Abel Rodgers, built largely by the children of Marfa ISD. This Summer Shake Up Program offered by the Marfa Studio of Arts was funded in part by the Texas Commission on the Arts: Art Respond Project and the MSA program fund. A special materials grant was given to this program by the First Presbyterian Church of Marfa.

Two Marfa Studio Arts students ask for a “honk” to show appreciation for their fort.

As Summer Shake-up has now concluded, so has the fort building program –– and MSA is celebrating with a party. All program participants and fort enthusiasts from the community are invited to come view the fort and gallery art show documenting the construction process on Thursday July 3, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Ice cream and beverages will be served, and some folks will be holding signs while yelling at passing cars to “Honk if you like the fort!”
