ALPINE — Last Thursday, Texas State Sen. César J. Blanco hosted a “Beat the Heat” senior box fan giveaway at the Lions Club in Alpine, where 54 box fans were distributed to economically disadvantaged senior citizens and families.
With high temperatures during the summer months, this initiative aims to assist economically disadvantaged seniors and families in keeping their homes cool and help reduce their electric bills.
Bringing this effort to a rural community like Alpine is essential, as residents in remote areas often face greater barriers to accessing resources and support during extreme weather.
According to Harvard Medical School, more than 80% of the estimated 12,000 individuals in the United States who succumb to heat-related causes annually are aged 60 and above. Because older people tend to have more chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease, elevated temperatures make it harder to cool off the body. Medicines that many older people use to treat chronic ailments, such as diuretics for high blood pressure, can also make them more vulnerable to the heat.
“Helping disadvantaged families and senior citizens stay safe and save money during the extreme summer heat is a top priority,” Blanco said. “For many living on fixed incomes, high electricity bills can be a serious burden. This fan giveaway is about easing that financial strain, giving the community a way to stay cool without having to worry about rising energy costs.”
“In rural communities like Alpine, where access to resources can be more limited, it’s especially important to bring this kind of support directly to those who need it most,” Blanco said. “I’m proud to continue this annual tradition and to work with our local partners to provide real, practical support for our community’s most vulnerable residents.”
