Renowned jazz musician and composer Roscoe Mitchell is scheduled to perform with his trio at the Chinati Foundation as part of Chinati Weekend 2025 in Marfa, Texas. The concert will be held at The Capri, 603 W. San Antonio Street, on Friday, October 10, at 8 p.m. The performance will feature Mitchell on woodwinds alongside bassist Junius Paul and drummer Vincent Davis.

The trio, which features long-time collaborators of Mitchell, represents his continuous push for innovation. Mitchell has worked with percussionist Vincent Davis for over 30 years and with bassist Junius Paul for at least two decades. The trio’s performance is a testament to Mitchell’s legacy as a leader in avant-garde jazz and contemporary music. He is a founding member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and the world-renowned Art Ensemble of Chicago.

Mitchell’s work often blurs the lines between composition and improvisation, a philosophy he calls “composition in real time.” He believes that “to be a good improviser, you have to study composition as a parallel. Because what improvisation is, on a high level, is spontaneous composition.” This approach is evident in his diverse discography, which includes over 87 albums and 250 compositions. Mitchell’s dedication to his craft is unwavering, as he stated, “I just consider myself a student, trying to learn more about it.”
