Brewster County deputies and DPS state troopers responded to a rollover crash near Altuda—about 30 miles east of Alpine—on Highway 90 at 2:30 a.m. on December 9. All three occupants were transported to Big Bend Regional Medical Center for treatment, according to a DPS report. Jose Ernesto Garcia, Jr., 20 of Ojinaga, Mexico, was pronounced deceased following transport.
The driver of the 2010 Jeep Wrangler—Adriel Hernandez, 17 of Marfa—was later transported to University Medical Center of El Paso. He was listed in stable condition. Also transported to El Paso was Alejandro Castaneda, 21 of Austin, who was listed in critical condition. The men were not wearing seatbelts, according to the report.
The report states that the Jeep was traveling East on Highway 90 and went off the road onto the unimproved shoulder. The vehicle rolled over, and the driver and passengers were ejected.
Garcia’s family has started a GoFundMe campaign to help with expenses returning him to Ojinaga and for burial expenses: gofundme.com/f/4xwkh7-support-for-joses-final-journey-home. He leaves behind a wife and 1-year-old son.
