Fort Davis

Join the Jeff Davis County Library on Wednesday, March 18, at 4 p.m., when a new book will be highlighted by Alpine author James H. McCommons. His book Feather Wars offers insight into the complex history of the bird protection movement in the United States.

Called the “definitive history of bird conservation in America” by Kirkus reviews, it traces the background of birds that were hunted for food, sport and fashion and tells of the disparate “heroes, martyrs, villains, and conflicted do-gooders who brought together a remarkable coalition of people and organizations to save America’s birds.” From passenger pigeons to current day endangered species, McCommons sums up the “Great Crusade to Save America’s Birds.”

The program is free and is sponsored by Friends of the Jeff Davis Library and celebrates local authors’ contributions to history and science. Copies of the book will be available for purchase through a partnership with Front Street Books of Alpine and will be signed by McCommons.
