Marfa
The March 23 Marfa ISD School Board meeting came and went without public mention of the lack of potential candidates to join the board. Board Member Stela Fuentez’s seat remains open, and Board Member Lori Flores will vacate her seat in May.
Fuentez, whose seat expires May 2027, resigned from the board in January, and the board solicited letters of interest from the community to fill her seat at the same time a deadline came up to file for Flores’ seat in the May election. The board received one letter of interest and zero applicants to run for the election. That election was finally formally canceled at the meeting.
The one letter of interest came from state District Judge Genie Wright, who attended a meeting in February and met with the board members in closed session. Wright left before the board reconvened, and a motion by Fuentez to accept her appointment died on the table.
With one seat vacant, another empty seat coming up in May and a canceled election, Board President Philip Boyd said they will continue to solicit letters of interest until the seats are filled.
