A recent School Board agenda item indicates the district may be seeking a new superintendent, but confirmation on that move was unavailable as of Big Bend Sentinel’s press time.

The March 30 meeting agenda item for a closed-door session read: “Consultation Regarding Legal Issues Related to Employment of New Superintendent and Employment Matters,” followed by “Discussion and Consideration of the Superintendent Evaluation/Contract.

Board President Philip Boyd said that in the closed session, board members authorized him to have discussions with others on a matter, but he said he could not give details on those discussions. However Boyd said an agenda due out this week for another meeting next week would make everything clearer for the public. That agenda was expected to be posted Wednesday after Sentinel press time.

Since board members are not allowed to divulge what is said in closed session, no members would comment on the matter.

The current interim superintendent, Arturo Alferez, has been on an “administrator contract,” since he has not completed his superintendent’s certification. The board hired him as interim superintendent in the Summer of 2023. Alferez did not respond to requests for comment.

The usual next step for school boards is to hire a search firm for superintendent candidates, which would eventually require a public School Board vote in open session.
