TxDOT worker loved the drag races

Benjamin D. “Benny” Benavidez, 65, of Presidio, Texas, passed away on April 28, 2026, in Odessa, Texas.

Visitation took place on Sunday, May 3, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Alpine Memorial Funeral Home Chapel located at 209 W. Sul Ross Avenue in Alpine, Texas. On Monday, May 4, another viewing/visitation began at 9 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marfa, with the recitation of the Most Holy Rosary at 10 a.m. and the funeral 11 a.m., where Fr. Edroud Jean served as clergy. After the Mass, a procession to Cementerio de la Merced took place to lay Benny to rest.

Benny was born in Fort Davis, Texas, to Ben and Lucia Benavidez on November 19, 1960. He went to school in Marfa, graduating in 1979. He then went on to work in oil and gas exploration and traveled the country. During this time, he met his beloved wife, Alicia, and they married on July 9, 1983. After settling in Presidio in 1992, he worked for the Texas Department of Transportation for 25 years until his retirement in 2017. Benny cherished spending time with his children and grandchildren especially. He loved working on cars and projects and was a staple at the local drag races in Presidio and Ojinaga. When he was not racing, he could probably be found riding his Harley with his wife or working at the family ranch near Ruidosa. He will truly be missed by his family and many great friends.

Benny is preceded in death by his parents Ben and Lucia Benavidez, his paternal grandparents Juan and Petra Benavidez, and maternal grandparents Felix and Anita Dominguez.

Benny is survived by wife, Alicia Q. Benavidez; daughter Sandra Vanessa Benavidez; son Benjamin Q. Benavidez; brother Steve Benavidez; sisters Teresa Porras and Louisa Benavidez; and granddaughters Athena Ramirez and Shayla Ramirez.
