Marfa teacher inspired generations of children to read

Jan Allston Harkey, 87, of San Angelo, Texas, entered the gates of heaven on May 9, 2026. She was born on August 25, 1938, in Amarillo, Texas, to John and Lura Allston. Jan was a beloved mother, spouse, daughter, grandmother, and teacher. Her childhood dream was to start a family and become a teacher. She was blessed to achieve both. Jan made her home in Marfa, Texas, where she taught for 36 years and influenced generations of children to read and love dinosaurs. She was a devoted Green Bay Packers fan.
Jan was a loving wife to Wally Harkey. Jan is survived by her son, Johnny, and wife Kim of Midland, Texas; daughter Teresa and husband Scottie of Flagstaff, Arizona; and three grandchildren, Randi, Michael (wife Kaitlin), and Anna (husband Benjamin); and two great-grandchildren, Lelia and Luke. She also leaves behind stepsons Jackie Harkey and Benny Harkey (wife Laura), their families, and many nieces and nephews.
She was loved by all and made an impact wherever she went. She was a light in many lives. Her Christian faith, big heart, and love for children defined her life. She will be remembered for her dedication, love, devotion, resilience, and generosity. Her family is grateful for all the angels who cared for her: Hospice staff, loving neighbors, Visiting Angels, and especially Jane, Yolanda, and Heather. We also want to thank pastor Noel Gay Howard and pastor Rick.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at 10 a.m. at the Chapel, 2606 Southland Blvd, San Angelo, TX 76904. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the charity of your choice.
