Marfa ISD School Board trustees took action to reorganize board structure at Monday night’s meeting and gave a special nod to student athlete Ayden Alvarez who competed at the UIL State Track and Field meet in Austin last weekend.

Board members Ruben Martinez, Jay Foster, Jonathan Lockett, Philip Boyd and Teresa Nunez were present.

After Board President Boyd read the agenda item for board reorganization, Nunez said, “I think we do need to move things around. I think we need to get some new officers.” Former secretary and Place 2 Trustee Lori Flores vacated her seat this May. After some discussion, Ruben Martinez agreed to act as secretary. Foster accepted the role as vice president, replacing Rene Gonzales––who was not present at Monday’s meeting. Boyd said he would continue his role as president, and the reassignment of officers passed unanimously.

Newly-appointed trustee Lockett is not eligible to be an officer for another year.

Interim Superintendent Alferez also publicly recognized Marfa junior Alvarez, who won fourth place in boys 1A shot put with an impressive throw of 49 feet 3.25 inches at the UIL State Track and Field Meet on May 16.

“[Alvarez] represented the district well. At the send-off the whole district was out there. Kudos to him, to his family, to his coaches. Hopefully we’ll get to see him and more [student athletes] at state again next year,” Alferez said of the track star.

The students’ last day of school is Friday, May 22. As another school year winds down this week, Marfa ISD is preparing to celebrate the Class of 2026 at a graduation ceremony on Friday, May 29, at 7 p.m. at Martin Field.
