At Monday night’s meeting, the Marfa ISD Board of Trustees administered the oath of office to newly-appointed Board Member Paul Salgado.
After a brief deliberation, Board Members Jay Foster, Jonathan Lockett, Ruben Martinez, Teresa Nunez and Board President Philip Boyd unanimously voted to accept Salgado as Place 2 trustee, filling a seat that had been vacant since early May. Place 4 Trustee Rene Gonzales did not attend the meeting.
Salgado is a lifelong Marfa resident and graduate of Marfa High School with grandchildren now at the district. Retired from a career with the Texas Department of Transportation, he said he is interested in helping out the schools and volunteering his time. Cheers erupted in the room after Salgado took his oath, and he was met with hugs and handshakes as he took his seat at the board table.
The school board is still interviewing candidates for the superintendent position to replace Interim Superintendent Arturo Alferez, which Boyd hopes will be finalized before the start of the 2026-2027 school year on August 24. Another closed meeting to interview and deliberate candidates is scheduled for Saturday, June 27, at 8 a.m.
