Council hears grant updates, tables discussion on RV ordinance

Presidio

Pablo Rodriguez

Presidio City Administrator Pablo Rodriguez was presented with a certificate by the City Council in recognition for his four years of work after he retired to spend more time with his family. Mayor Ferguson noted in the council meeting Tuesday that he is the rare city official in recent months to leave on his own terms and thanked him for his work.

Other city officials sang Rodriguez’s praises. “I hope whoever comes along next can at least fill your shoes,” said Becky Brewster, who is leading grant applications for the city. She also offered progress updates on grants aimed to improve water infrastructure, which are on track to be completed this year.

A motion passed allowing a grant to be submitted to expand water access on the west side of Highway 67. And the city received funding to start a feasibility study for solutions to the landfill.

The city agreed to coordinate with the county on emergency dispatch and road maintenance, despite noted hesitation from Marfa. “It’s always good to work together. If they don’t have the manpower maybe they can help out with the equipment,” said Councilmember Silverio Escontrias.

The council  tabled a conversation about only allowing RVs and mobile homes that are permanent residences within the city limits, an issue that will be discussed on Aug. 4. Two Presidio residents recently told the City Council that they were intending to build small RV parks inside the city limits, which got the attention of border wall activists concerned they would be used to house contractors.
