School officially started Monday, August 24, but Marfa athletics have been in full swing for weeks.
Varsity football traveled to Dell City on Saturday for scrimmages as the team continues getting back into the groove of the season with new head coach, Felix Reyes. The Shorthorns got to face off against Dell City and Sierra Blanca, giving them an opportunity to see what they need to work on moving forward.
“Our defense was great, and we held both teams scoreless. District, in my opinion, is ours to lose,” said Coach Reyes, who joins Marfa ISD from Sierra Blanca where he coached football and basketball. Now sporting purple and white, the team agrees he looks much better in Shorthorn colors.
Meanwhile, the Lady Horns were busy this weekend competing in the Van Horn Superstar Showdown Volleyball Tournament on August 21-22. They played six teams throughout the weekend and won their games against Van Horn JV and Iraan. The Lady Horns battled through tournament play and continued building chemistry early in the season.
And on the trails, the Shorthorn cross-country athletes hit the ground running August 26 at the Van Horn Red Rock Run for their second meet of the season. The boys ran well, with Diego Sanchez-Bravo finishing 17th and Raivon Hamilton placing 25th. On the girls’ side, Sophomore Mikayla Bentley finished 23rd, Junior Ora Webb placed 7th and Senior Zoey Salgado took 6th place. Junior Alyssa Harden had an impressive 3rd-place finish, coming home with some hardware!
On Thursday evening, Marfa ISD and the Marfa Athletic Booster Club teamed up for the annual Meet the Shorthorns event, where student-athletes from junior high and high school were recognized for their participation and dedication to Marfa athletics. The elementary student council, led by fifth-grade teacher Mrs. Cain, was also recognized for their leadership and commitment to making a positive impact at Marfa ISD.
The Marfa Athletic Booster Club provided complimentary hot dogs, chips and drinks as a small way of saying thank you to the community for its continued support of Marfa athletics and student-athletes.
