A caravan of anti-wall protestors made its way from Lajitas to Redford Sunday morning, including cars and trucks adorned with signs and flags. The intent was to bring attention to the threat to Big Bend Ranch State Park, and attendees stopped at river campgrounds along the route. Organizers also wanted to call attention to the threat to private landowners up river from Redford to Ft. Quitman.
The gathering also was a celebration of sorts because of the recent two-week pause (an extension of an existing one) for construction in Big Bend National Park. Although all were aware that this temporary positive development carried uncertainty about next steps and had no bearing on the state park and private land.
The caravan ended with burgers and pool time in Redford. There, former park ranger Mike Ryan, archaeologist David Keller and river outfitter Charlie Angell gave updates on the battle against the wall and thanked the dozens in attendance for their efforts.
