Friday marked the Horns’ first home game of the season as they welcomed the Buena Vista Longhorns. As stated by Coach Reyes: “It was a tough loss against Buena Vista. Momentum was going our way, but small numbers going late in the game played a big factor for us. We went in as underdogs and were picked to be 45’d by halftime.” (The game ends with the “mercy rule” if a team is ahead by 45 points.) The end result was an 84-56 loss, putting the team at 2-2.
But the Shorthorns held their own until the 4th quarter. Leading the way was Ayden Alvarez with 179 rushing yards and 138 passing yards including 6 touchdowns on the ground rushing, with all-purpose yards for 317 total.
Austin McGary led the team with 163 yards receiving and another 70 yards rushing and adding 2 touchdowns along with 11 tackles.
Seth Nunez and Miguel Rey led the defense with another strong showing, with Abelardo Marquez leading the way with 14 tackles.
The Shorthorns now face Sanderson this Friday in hopes of getting back on a winning momentum.
Coach Reyes said, “I am very proud of the boys for holding their own and taking it down to the wire. Our numbers are small, but our fight is big, and they proved it once again against a big opponent.”
On Saturday, the Lady Horns traveled to Fort Davis where they faced the Lady Indians. Despite a strong effort, the Lady Horns were swept. This is the first district loss for the Lady Horns and hopefully the last. Looking ahead, Coach Ontiveros said, “We need to work on our defense to cover better and be more prepared to stay on our toes and be ready for anything.”

Today, September 22: JH and varsity Lady Horns take on the Sierra Blanca Vaqueros at home at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Friday, September 25: JH and varsity Shorthorns travel to Sanderson where they will take on the Eagles.
