MARFA — The Marfa City Council hired a new city administrator — Marfa native Hilda Cordero — last Thursday after struggling with the open position for some two years.
Cordero is currently an assistant managing director for business operations, energy and utilities at Texas Tech University, where she has worked in various positions since 2018. She said her responsibilities at the university equate well to helping manage city operations.
The daughter of the late Felipe “Phil ”Cordero — a former Presidio County commissioner who played numerous roles in the community — she also runs the family’s RV park business in Marfa. “So, I’ve been very in tune with what’s happening in Marfa,” she said. Cordero will be moving from Lubbock to Marfa at the end of the month and will start full time on November 2.
“My number one priority is sticking true to my core values, and communications and accountability,” Codero said. She said she will be devoted to bringing the city’s residents to common ground when addressing the challenges of aging infrastructure, lack of city staff and limited resources.
“There still are issues with transparency and communications as well,” she said, and she intends to open up city government to engage the public more in policy decisions.
