Elias Carrasco Villalobos

“For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”  Philippians 1:21

Elias Carrasco Villalobos passed away in Odessa, Texas, on Dec. 8, 2020, at the age of 62.  He was born in Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico, on January 13, 1958, and is the eldest son of Virginia Carrasco Villalobos and Ramon Baeza Carrasco. He is survived by his wife, Silvia Carrasco Zubia, and his two sons: Elias Carrasco and Carlos Carrasco (Nelsy Torres).  He has eight surviving siblings: Delia Carrasco, Elvira Carrasco, Manuel Carrasco, Arturo Carrasco, Ruben Carrasco, Hilda Carrasco Galindo, Ramon Carrasco and Vicky Carrasco; and many nieces and nephews.

Elias was considered:

-extremely loyal, noble, kind, humble and giving

-the patriarch of the Carrasco Villalobos family (more than 60 in the family)

-the “nucleus” of the family

-a loving husband to Silvia, ALWAYS by her side everywhere they went

-a dependable and loving father to his two sons

-the “right hand/mano derecha” of Mrs. Virginia Carrasco, his mother.

-the “second” father, or the “other grandfather” to many nieces and nephews

Elias inherited from his parents a loving nature, a benevolent heart, and “mucha caridad.”  He is best known by his family and friends for his giving nature and for lending a hand for many in need.  In addition to always being there for immediate family, he also helped extended family and friends that were in need.

He was a family man, first and foremost. For Thanksgiving, Christmas and other holidays, he would usually spend time in Presidio alongside his mother and other family members.  Always staying up until 3 or 4 a.m., either telling anecdotes from the ranch, playing dominoes and/or playing cards.  And a bottle of spiced Sotol was his favorite. He’d often go hunting with his brothers Ruben, Ramon, Manuel and Arturo. When Elias visited Presidio, his mother would always prepare him his favorite dishes, which were chile con asadero, chile rojo con carne, frijoles, chivito, and flour tortillas. What his mother called “comida de rancho.”

While he could have enjoyed traveling the world, his free time, vacation time and any extra money he had was dedicated to the family ranches, which are La Escondida, Las Amapolas and El Caracol (near the community of Las Conchas, Ojinaga, Mexico, across from Ruidosa, Texas).  The ranch was his life.  While it takes approximately an hour’s ride on a dirt road to get there, Elias and his wife’s passion was always the ranch, and their plans were to retire there.  He cared for many goats, llamas, horses, and cattle, and he always welcomed all family members and friends to enjoy more than 3000 acres of untouched land, with many natural springs, grape vines, and pecan, lime, fig and pomegranate trees. His favorite hobbies at the ranch were hiking, horseback riding, hunting, and making eco-friendly improvements to the land property.

Elias grew up in Las Conchas, La Escondida, and Ojinaga, Mexico, but later lived in Pecos, Presidio and Odessa, Texas.

 

Elias’s story is one of motivation, opportunity, challenges and success. As his family recounts, while they came from a poor background, his experiences and livelihood wielded an appreciation for hard work and humility. While all of his siblings went to high school and most received a college education, Elias only went to school until fifth grade.  However, through dedication, sacrifices, benevolence and hard work, he became the most successful businessman in the family.

At the young age of 11, he was sent to the family’s ranch, Rancho La Escondida, to spend his teenage years assisting the family in taking care of the family’s cattle, goats and other ranch duties. He worked with his father Ramon at a young age in making Candelilla, and was often joined by his brother Arturo and others.  In 1980, at the age of 22, he married Silvia Zubia Valenzuela in Las Conchas.

Their first home as a married couple was the original ranch house, made with handmade adobes, by him, his father Ramon and other siblings, at Rancho La Escondida.

In the early 1980s, Elias and his wife moved to Pecos, Texas, where he worked as a diesel mechanic for many years.  They then moved to Presidio, Texas, where Elias worked with Alvarado Cattle Company until about 1996. Eventually, the family moved to Odessa, where Elias became a truck driver initially, and then slowly bought additional semi-trucks and opened Carrasco Hot Shot and Trucking, a business that prospered along with the oil boom. During his time as an entrepreneur in the trucking business, he was known for being very honest, extremely dependable, and he was respected and admired by truck drivers, mechanics and clients/company owners that depended on his services.  In many occasions, a client would call at 3 a.m. and request, for example, a load of sand ASAP and Elias would call his employees, who were as dependable and willing to work at “crazy’ hours,” to provide service as needed.  His wife and sons supported him in all businesses, and eventually became owner of Country Clean Cleaners and Laundromat, in Odessa, Texas.

While Elias and Silvia didn’t venture out of Texas much, they have happily hosted friends and family, at their ranch multiple times, including guests from Maryland, Virginia, Houston, many places in Mexico and Texas, and even Germany.

During the last few years, Elias and his wife Silvia spend their retirement together at the ranch. In about 2017, they started making arrangements to begin living full-time at the ranch, while still managing business in the U.S. They had begun restoring the original house in La Escondida and making improvements to the land, such as fencing, constructing water tanks and building dirt roads to provide access to explore more of the property. While his time on earth was short-lived, he along with his wife, were able to enjoy life at the ranch. Many shared experiences and memories remain with loved ones, especially memories about him, coming back to his roots – Las Conchas, and specifically La Escondida.

Given COVID precautions, a Celebration of Life will be planned in 2021, in lieu of the traditional funeral.  “For me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”  Philippians 1:21
