MARFA — The Marfa ISD School Board held a special meeting Friday to approve the hiring of two new principals for the elementary and high school campuses.

Rosie Martinez will serve as the new elementary school principal and Dr. Candy Dominguez will serve as the new junior high and high school principal.

Martinez has worked as the elementary special education teacher for the past three years. Before coming to Marfa ISD, she served as an instructional specialist in El Paso and worked for the Region 20 Education Service Center as an autism consultant. Martinez holds a principal certification from the state.

Martinez is stepping into the role after the resignation of longtime principal Amy White in May.

“Amy was loved by the students, the community, the staff. So definitely a big pair of shoes to fill,” Martinez said. “But Amy did a great job working with us and instilling her values and some of her belief systems within us. I think I’m going to be able to take what I learned from her and move the school forward.”

Dominguez most recently served as an Assistant Principal at Pecos-Barstow-Toyah ISD and before that in various roles in El Paso and Midland. Interim Superintendent Arturo Alferez said she is “a very experienced educator as she has served as a counselor, coordinator and assistant principal in her other previous school districts.” Dominguez holds a principal certification from the state.

The role of the junior high and high school principal has been vacant for a year since the resignation of Luane Porter in July of 2023.
Alferez said he is thankful to the interview committee for their recommendations on the hires, and is looking forward to welcoming two new members to the district’s leadership team. “The students of Marfa have two great campus leaders that will continue to seek the best opportunities for them,” Alferez said.
