“During Lent, art can serve as a powerful tool for spiritual reflection and contemplation, helping individuals connect with the themes of repentance, sacrifice, and hope, ultimately deepening their faith and preparing them for Easter,” says Erickson.

Erickson says by closely observing and pondering artwork, individuals can engage in “visio divina” (spiritual insight through art), allowing them to reflect on the transformation for which is called for Lent.

“Art provides a visual language to express and understand complex spiritual concepts, helping individuals connect with their faith in a tangible way,” he says. “During Lent, the focus on suffering and sacrifice can be expressed through art, allowing individuals to process their own struggles and find solace in the shared human experience of pain and redemption.”

The stations are a cross-section of elements, ideas and objects. “As you work through these stations, may you see that we are not troubled guests in this world … that we are not forsaken,” Erickson says.
