PRESIDIO — On Monday, the organizers of the Presidio Youth Sports Association (PYSA) announced that they would have to cancel their wildly popular spring T-ball, softball and baseball program if no new volunteer leadership could be recruited. “We would like to extend the opportunity for anyone who is willing to take on the challenge,” the group posted on Facebook. “If there are interested individuals from the community that want to lead and organize the season, please DM us no later than the end of this week.”

PISD School Board Trustee Perla Natividad — for whom the youth recreational league is a family affair — explained that it’s difficult to find volunteers and that the folks who had been managing the program were feeling extremely burned out. Many of the existing volunteer coaches also coach travel teams, which takes a big bite out of their ability to serve young athletes in town. “It’s very time consuming without the help and support,” she said.

Natividad said that — in addition to new leadership — the organization is always looking for volunteer help with tasks like handling registrations, ordering uniforms, maintaining ballfields and organizing games, which typically take place Monday through Thursday after school. Umpires are in especially short supply. “Having to find them constantly for games that are already scheduled puts us in a bind,” she said.
