MARFA — The Chinati Foundation invites you to the opening of Marfa Moments, a one-night photography exhibition by Marfa Independent School District high school students. This Friday, May 2, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., visit the exhibition at the Marfa Public Library, meet the student artists, and enjoy hotdogs and a piñata. Free and open to all.
Marfa Moments is the latest engagement in a long-standing collaboration between the Chinati Foundation’s education department and Marfa ISD. This year’s program began with a trip to view Zoe Leonard’s Al río / To the River. Currently on view at Chinati, the exhibition consists of photographs taken along a 1,200-mile stretch of the Rio Grande/Río Bravo. In January, Chinati educators built a darkroom at the school as a resource for current and future students.

Throughout February and March, educators collaborated with Marfa ISD instructors to teach over 50 students who participated in the sixth-grade art class, art I, and advanced art. Students produced cyanotypes, pinhole photography, Polaroid portraiture, and 35mm film photos. The work on view in Marfa Moments is as varied as the materials used — Polaroids of students in wigs and sunglasses, photograms of Godzilla, a 35mm print of the power station in Sal Si Puedes, a composition featuring a school urinal, and more.
Many thanks to Marfa ISD, Adele Powers, Michael Roch, and the other instructors for making the program possible.
