A still from "Afternoon of Soliitude."

In Front of Us Is proud to present Afternoons of Solitude, a documentary film about a bullfighter by Albert Serra. The Screening Wednesday September 17, at 7:30 p.m. at the Crowley Theater in Marfa. Admission is free.

Albert Serra is a highly acclaimed Spanish-Catalan independent filmmaker whose first documentary feature Afternoons of Solitude turns its gaze on the splendor and brutality of bullfighting in Spain. The beauty of the film, and its psychological approach make it a compelling film about bullfighting for those who are appalled by the sport. Bullfighting fans of course will be thrilled. With quiet intensity, Serra follows famed matador Andrés Roca Rey, from his hotel room and the meticulousness of his preparations to the charged spectacle of the arena.

Albert Serra is known for his radical approach to adapting European classics, often using non-professional actors and a distinctive minimalist style.  He gained international recognition with his first long feature, Honor of the Knights, a free adaptation of Don Quijote played by non-professional actors from his village. For his second film, Birdsong, Serra took inspiration in a traditional Catalan Christmas song, “El cant dels ocells,” and worked with the same group of people to tell the story of the Three Wise Men following their guiding star to find Jesus. His films have received awards like the Golden Leopard at Locarno and the Special Jury Prize at Cannes.

Thanks to Marfa Live Arts, Crowley Theater and the City of Marfa for their support of the series.
