Alpine
Dozens of area residents recently took part in a project to install hundreds of mosaic eyes in a wall along historic Murphy Street in Alpine. For months, Alpine mosaic artist Liz Sibley opened her studio to teach participants to cut glass, assort colorful pieces of different materials, and arrange them to form eyes for the wall.
“Don’t overthink it,” Sibley told a class recently preparing the installation. “Go back to your 6-year-old self and say, “Ooh, colors. I’m just going to build something fun.”
Sibley, a gallery owner who also has worked on projects like the Art Alley murals and mosaic utility poles in Alpine, partnered with her niece, Shiloh Sibley Cutforth, and the two set out to teach her neighbors the craft needed to add some sparkle to 106 W. Murphy Street. Blue background tile was added to the 100-foot-long wall in October, and crews went to work over months with a goal of 200 eyes, but the end count totaled well over 300––which were unveiled in an opening ceremony for Eye Love Mosaics on November 22.
