Ornament by Tina Rivera.

The spirit of Marfa rose up and shone brightly Saturday night at Do Right Hall as throngs of folks seeking some 400 ornaments made by those near and far jostled each other to reach their sought-after ornaments as the start bell rang, each priced at $20. The sale, a fundraiser for the Marfa Food Pantry––started 36 years ago by Genevieve Bassham who saw a need and filled it and is still at the helm––raised $8,000, basically twice the original goal.

Genevieve Bassham, long-time coordinator of the Marfa Food Pantry, welcomes a big crowd ready to purchase ornaments for the food pantry fundraiser.

Gallery owners Buck Johnston and Camp Bosworth hatched the homemade ornament sale plan and brought it to life, inspiring all to participate, featuring DJ Julie Bernal, a rotund Adam Bork as Santa, and wild creations. The event spread the best kind of holiday cheer, and the good people of Marfa responded in kind. Donations to the pantry can still be made at marfafoodpantry.com/make-a-donation.
