Elias “Chumare” H. Sanchez, 87, born in Marfa, Texas, on September 23, 1933, to Antonia and Juan Sanchez, passed away October 28, 2020, at Big Bend Regional Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.

Elias grew up in Marfa and attended Blackwell School up to the eighth grade. He played football, basketball and baseball. He was a member of the Marfa Indians baseball team. He served in the Marine Corps from 1953 to 1956. He was stationed in Japan for two years and then was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California. He also played baseball while in the service. He was honorably discharged from the Marines in September 1956. He came back to Marfa and worked at Casner Motor Company for several years, and then he worked with the Rio Grand for 37 years before he retired and enjoyed his life.

He and Berta Ceniceros Sanchez married on February 15, 1958, were married for 62 years and were blessed with three children: Mario, Rojelio and Carmelena.

His hobbies were watching football, wrestling, car races and cowboy movies. He also enjoyed working crossword puzzles and dancing. He loved to listen to tejano music.

Elias was blessed with nine grandchildren: Jeneca Sanchez, Rojelio V. Sanchez, Nathan D. Sanchez, John Arron Sanchez, Bianca O. Sanchez Magon Harris, Samantha Huff, Michael Ohl and Makayla Sanchez; and also 16 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Sanchez was preceded in death by his parents and grandsons, John Arron Sanchez and Michael Ohl.

A military graveside service was held Friday, November 6, at 2 p.m. at La Merced Cemetery in Marfa, Texas. Fr. John Paul Madanu was the celebrant. Serving as pallbearers were Nathaniel Sanchez, Johnny Sanchez, Jordan Acosta, Rogelio Sanchez Jr., Eddie Dominguez and Danny Dominguez.
