Sylvia was born in Presidio, Texas, to Ascension Barriga and Gregoria Rivera Barriga on February 02, 1956. She went to Presidio High School and graduated in the top 3. She briefly worked at the Border Patrol with plans to go to college in Alpine, when she fell in love. She married Luis Manuel “Meme” Holguin on December 21, 1974, in Presidio. Luis, being an Army soldier, received orders to go to Germany and took Sylvia there after high school. They started a family and returned to Presidio briefly before moving to Odessa, Texas. She was a homemaker and raised five children as well as becoming the pillar that built that foundation for her family and always had her doors open to anyone in need. She brought her family up in the Catholic faith and was a devout Christian until her later years when her health began to affect her. Sylvia loved to dance and was always the first to be at any party or event to support family and friends in their celebrations. She will be greatly missed by many.
