FAR WEST TEXAS — Big Bend Conservation Alliance is calling for volunteers throughout the tri-county area to be part of a Lights Out Texas, a state-wide initiative that asks Texans to turn out or dim nonessential lights to support fall and spring birds during their migration, when hundreds of millions of birds will be passing through the state.

Volunteers will act as Bird Collision Caretakers, canvassing for birds that have collided with windows, so we can get specimens to Texas A&M for study. Volunteers will need to be on call during peak migration mornings, April 19 through May 7. There will be an upcoming virtual training for data collection procedures on March 25 with Heather Prestridge, curator in Biodiversity Research and Teaching Collections, Department of Ecology and Conservation Biology, Texas A&M University.

In addition to the caretaker role, there are other opportunities to contribute including helping make bird care packages that will be distributed at local libraries.
