TRI-COUNTY — Ever wonder what magic goes into building the walls of many of the earthen homes and buildings in the Big Bend? It’s mud!
It’s probably been a long time since you played in the mud, but you’ll get your chance this weekend when the Friends of the Ruidosa Church hosts an adobe-making day in Marfa on Saturday, June 15, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The adobe workshop will be held at Joey Benton’s adobe yard at 800 E Galveston in Marfa. Drive through the gate on Aparejo and follow the road to the site. Participants can expect to learn about the adobe-making process and traditional earthen building methods with the nonprofit’s team while working hard and getting dirty!
All bricks made will be used in the next phase of restoration of the adobe church, which was a foundation of community life on the Rio Grande in Ruidoso, about 37 miles west of Presidio.
All are welcome, including children, the event is free, and water, drinks and lunch will be provided. RSVP to ruidosachurch@gmail.com so the adobe masters can get a rough headcount. And come prepared for the desert with long-sleeved shirts, long pants, work boots, big hats and gloves. Participants are welcome to come for part or all of the event.
