PRESIDIO — In the last few years we have noticed an increasing level in the heartworm infection rate in dogs from the Presidio area. At this point over 50% of the dogs tested from Presidio have heartworm disease.

Heartworm disease is the presence of nematode worms in the heart and vessels in the chest. These are approximately 1/8” in diameter and can be 12” long. They obstruct the vessels and cause a variety of serious signs later in the course of the disease, even leading to death of the dog. Heartworms are transmitted by the bite of a mosquito. Mosquitos are commonly found in stagnant water and where possible, these water sources should be eliminated. Heartworm disease is diagnosed by a simple blood test that most veterinarians can perform. There is a monthly heartworm prevention available.

Once a dog has heartworm disease, there is a series of medications that can be used to eliminate the worms. If you have further questions or would like your dog tested, please contact your veterinarian.
