Diego Jurado & Maryfer Martinez

MARFA — Marfa High School seniors Diego Jurado and Mayfer Martinez were voted this year’s homecoming king and queen by the student body and were crowned last Friday before the homecoming football game against Sierra Blanca.

The Shorthorns beat the Vaqueros in a landslide victory 54-0. Jurado and Martinez were bestowed their crowns by last year’s king and queen, Luis Solis and Fernanda Rivera. Prince and princess were Andres Solis and Janayah Villa.

Jurado said being named this year’s homecoming king is a “one of a kind feeling.” “My heart was pounding when they announced Andres as prince! And then they said my name, and it was the best feeling,” Jurado said. “Winning the game after was the cherry on top!!”

Martinez agreed hearing her name announced as queen was an exciting, yet nerve-racking moment. “Being homecoming queen feels very exciting and joyful! The best part of the night was probably when they announced my name because I didn’t expect it at all,” Martinez said. “I’m injured and can’t play volleyball this season, so this is a highlight of my senior year!”

Solis said it was a tight race, and he was proud of his campaign. “It makes me feel really great to know that a bunch of people voted for me,” Solis said. “Both the king and queen votes were only separated by three. I think I ran a good campaign, a lot of people liked my comida!”

Villa credited her success to the campaign she ran alongside Kiko Rosas. “Me personally, me and Kiko, we brought good food and drinks, and I’m happy with the campaign we ran,” Villa said. “It was so close! But I got a sash and flowers and a crown, and I’m happy!”
