MARFA  — Marfa Open Gallery will host CHOKE, a Washington, D.C.-born artist and current artist in residence at Marfa Open Gallery, for her highly anticipated solo exhibition, A Return to Source. The exhibition will be on view from October 10 to 13.

A Return to Source invites viewers to engage with a deeply introspective series of works that explore the concepts of identity, self-awareness and the cosmic forces that shape our existence. Driven by life experience, personal liberation, spiritual exploration and nature, CHOKE has created a series of work that challenges our understanding of spirituality, cosmological science and the unseen connections between body, soul and spirit, using bold minimalistic textures and symbolic forms.

For the past two decades, CHOKE (Creating Her Own Kinetic Energy) has been known for her brightly-colored portrait work of many known and not-so-known spiritual jazz musicians and revolutionary figures. But this series drops it all and dives into the very deep and very fundamentals of being.

Interestingly, this series began when CHOKE was just 16 years old and has never seen the light of day — until now. It reflects decades of self determination, meditation, spiritual practice and artistic refinement. Utilizing materials such as handmade paint created from the ashes of burned herbs, resins and natural elements, her work is infused with profound intention and attention to cosmic events. CHOKE’s art transforms the gallery space into a meditative portal where viewers are invited to sit, reflect and experience the subtle layers of consciousness.

In addition to the exhibition, the artist will host a series of events throughout the weekend, including daily tea meditations at 10 a.m., an artist talk on Friday, October 11, at 6:30 p.m., and an ambient light viewing party with a DJ on Saturday, October 12, at 7:30 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to immerse themselves in this multisensory experience that bridges art, spirituality and community.
