FORT DAVIS — A recently published compilation of short stories by Joe Holley, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, will be the highlight of a program at the Jeff Davis County Library on Saturday, December 14. The book is written in a very witty, conversational style that reminds one of the late Lonn Taylor’s stories, yet it has many more varied subjects. This free presentation starts at 11 a.m, and is sponsored by Friends of the Library.
Native Texan is divided into five parts beginning with “Texans Who Dropped Out of the History Books (or Were Never There to Begin With)” and includes such individuals as Bigfoot Wallace, Bass Reeves, and Seminole Scouts. Part Two is equally lively with “Feuding, Mayhem and Madness,” which tells of seven events including “E.E. Townsend, the Young Man in the Big Bend Who Came to No Good End,” “A Brush with Bonnie and Clyde’s Getaway Drivers” and “Pig Wars,” which are the timeless battles with javelinas. There is a chapter featuring notable women such as Mary Austin Holley and “Thorny Rose,” and the book concludes with a look at the uniqueness of special Texas places. Each chapter averages four pages in a very readable, colorful, and fast paced format.
Joe Holley will have copies of the book available for purchase and signing. Light refreshments will be available. Contact the library at (432) 426 -3802 for further information.
