From Daniel Alvarado, Reeves County director of digital media
PECOS – A solemn ceremony to honor the lives of two individuals tragically lost in the train derailment that occurred on December 18 will take place on Sunday, January 19, 2025 at 4 p.m. at the West of the Pecos Museum, 120 E Dot Stafford St, Pecos. Please wear yellow and red as a gesture of respect and solidarity.
The ceremony will provide an opportunity for reflection, support, and healing, while expressing solidarity for the grieving families. While the two gentlemen we are honoring — locomotive engineer Clay Burt and conductor Phillip Araujo — honoring were not members of our immediate community, their service and sacrifice have deeply impacted us all. As the conductor and engineer onboard the train, they gave their lives in the line of duty, and we will come together to honor their memory and offer support to those who grieve their loss.
The ceremony, titled “United in Love and Remembrance: A Tribute to Those We’ve Lost,” invites members of the public to join together in a show of unity, strength, and remembrance.
“During difficult times like these, we must continue to come together as a community, state and nation to offer comfort and support to those who are grieving,” said Daniel Alvarado, volunteer master of ceremonies. “This ceremony will serve as a reminder that even in the darkest moments, love, unity, and faith can bring us strength and healing.”
In addition to the ceremony, music will be featured to offer a sense of solace and reflection. We are pleased to announce that all music played during the event has been granted permission from the respective recording labels, ensuring the event is both legally and respectfully conducted.
The event will be held at the West of the Pecos Museum front steps. Members of the public are invited to attend, show support, and help honor the memories of the two individuals lost. Together, we can remind the families and our community that they are not alone in their grief, and that we stand united during this heartbreaking time.
