MARFA — Presidio County commissioners voted to throw support behind an initiative for a new scoreboard for Vizcaino Park at a regular meeting on Wednesday.

The court voted to allocate $1,000 towards a new scoreboard for Vizcaino, with the Los Yonke Gallos de Marfa, the local sandlot baseball team, to help raise the remaining funds. County Commissioner Deirdre Hisler brought forth the item, noting it is a “great need” for her precinct.

The existing scoreboard is obsolete, explained Gallos co-manager Cody Bjornson — its electrical connection severed and its controller lost. He said the team, the primary users of the park, are in need of a working scoreboard and were willing to help fundraise for the effort. A home run derby the team hosted last weekend raised around $500, he said.

Bjornson explained that a new scoreboard will cost around $6,200 and feature LED displays and a wireless controller so a new electrical line will not have to be dug. He said the team will seek out local sponsors to replace the single Coca-Cola logo on the existing board and that additional attributions to Vizcaino, Juan Lara Field, the Gallos, and past teams like the Marfa Indians may be considered.

The Gallos and Hisler were in agreement that a new refreshed scoreboard will help bring life to the county park for all users. County commissioner David Beebe also voiced support for the initiative, noting that the scoreboard will remain county property if the team were to dissolve and should be accessible to any team that uses the park.
