FORT DAVIS — “A horse, a saddle, a six-shooter and five head of cattle” began the tale of John Zack Means and his 15-year-old bride Exa Gay Means. Later, journeying from San Saba and the Colorado, they lost their herd of cattle to Comanche at the Pecos. Later still, they lost herds of over 10,000 head to drought, but eventually owned ranches in the Davis Mountains and prospered.

Jon Means will talk about his family and his Moon Ranch on March 18 at 6 p.m. with the Fort Davis Historical Society at the Overland Trail Museum, 511 N. Fort Street, by Sleeping Lion Mountain.

All are invited to hear of the Means family’s role in the founding of Bloys Campmeeting, the Marfa National Bank, the Masonic Lodge, the Means Ranch School at Crow’s Nest, partnering with the Evanses in ranches across several states and more.
