Marfa JH girls track team clinches district championship, JH boys finish 3rd
MARFA — The Marfa Junior High Girls Track Team has claimed the district championship, and Head Coach Arron Luna couldn’t be more proud of their hard work and commitment to the program as the teams improved in times throughout the season. Luna emphasized that track practices have been grueling, but the athletes’ determination and teamwork paid off. He credited the increased participation this year to the athletes’ dedication, with a total of 24 athletes competing in the JH division.
Standout performances: The girls’ relay teams were dominant, with standout athletes such as
Jerika Rodriguez, Liliana Zubia, Alayna Vasquez, Lea Alvidrez, and Mia Rosas contributing to strong finishes in the 4x100m, 4x200m, and 4x400m relays. Lyla Luppino impressed with a second-place finish in both the 100m and 300m hurdles.
Liliana Zubia took first place in the high jump, while Alayna Vasquez finished in second. Jerika Rodriguez earned second place in both the triple jump and long jump, rounding out a solid performance by the team.
Boys track highlights: The boys team also put in impressive performances, finishing third overall at the district meet. Relay runners Alan Martinez, Mattheau Bejaran, Tayvian Valenzuela, and Miguel Rey helped propel the boys team to strong finishes. Axel Urrutia also earned second place in both the 110m and 300m hurdles.
The hard work, commitment, and athleticism displayed by all the participants have made this track season one to remember for Marfa Junior High.

Marfa High School softball team battles hard in doubleheader against Westbrook
The Marfa High School softball team put up an incredible fight Tuesday in their doubleheader against Westbrook, showing resilience and determination throughout both games.
In Game 1, the Lady Horns engaged in a back-and-forth battle, led by pitcher Ava Flores, who not only controlled the game from the mound but also hit two inside-the-park home runs. Shortstop Raven Martinez was perfect in the field, making 13 consecutive outs to slow down Westbrook’s offensive attack. At the plate, Gisselle Lujan contributed with a triple and went 2-for-4, helping drive Marfa’s offense. Defensively, Dariela Munoz had a standout performance with 4 putouts, showing strong presence in the field.
Despite nearly three hours of intense play, the Lady Horns fell short in the final inning, losing 11-12 and also dropped Game 2 of the doubleheader, 6-12.
Looking ahead, the Lady Horns will travel to Ira on Friday for a crucial doubleheader against the Lady Bulldogs set for 2 and 4:30 p.m. With playoff hopes on the line, it’s a must-win situation for Marfa to secure a spot in the 2025 UIL softball postseason.
Marfa’s Golf Team Hosts 2025 District Track Meet Tuesday, April 7
The Shorthorns host this year’s district tournament on Tuesday with hopes of advancing to the regional tournament. Teams tee off at 9 a.m.
