ALPINE — Alpine will join thousands of cities worldwide in celebrating International Make Music Day on Saturday, June 21, with a full day of musical activities throughout downtown.

Visit Alpine has partnered with Cow Dog food truck and café, Amigo Sports Bar and Restaurant, and The Ritchey to bring this series of events to Far West Texas. The holiday, which began in France in 1982, encourages people to make and share music together rather than simply watch performances.

“This event is more about participation than performance,” said Chris Ruggia, Alpine’s director of tourism and Music Friendly Community liaison. “We’re inviting everyone to join in the music making, regardless of experience level.”

The celebration runs from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. across four downtown locations:

Morning (9 a.m. — Alpine Visitor Center): Free harmonica workshop for beginners led by Donnie “Wind” Bason and Cyndi Perdue, founder of the Big Bend Bluegrass Festival. Harmonicas provided at no cost. The Off the Rails Band performs on the Visitor Center porch until noon.

Afternoon (12-4 p.m. — Cow Dog): Open mic event with short sets by local musicians, sign-ups for community performers, and an entry-level percussion workshop.

Evening (4-7 p.m. — Amigo Sports Bar): Indoor showcase featuring Tom Griffith and Wind (4 p.m.), The Swifts (5 p.m.), and Far West Texas Jammers (6 p.m.).

Night (7-10 p.m. — The Ritchey): Community music circle in the historic Hotel Ritchey courtyard, hosted by songwriter Ross Fleming. All skill levels welcome.

Alpine earned designation as the 21st Texas Music Friendly Community in 2020 during the Viva Big Bend music festival. The program, administered by the Texas Music Office, now includes over 80 communities statewide.
