Fort Leaton State Historic Site is inviting the public to immerse themselves in the rich cultural traditions of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) with a special day of remembrance and celebration. The event, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m on Friday, October 31, will honor the family lore and history of those who once called the historic fort home.

A key feature of the day is the involvement of Presidio High School art students, who will be teaching visitors how to create authentic sugar skulls, brightly colored alebrijes (spirit animals), and intricate papel picado (cut-paper banners) for the ofrendas (altars). Attendees will get a firsthand look at how this significant day is celebrated in the Borderlands region. The fort will also be open for self-guided tours of the buildings and grounds..

The event will take place in Fort Leaton’s Dining Room. Admission is $5 for adults (age 13 and older) and free for children 12 and under. Admission is also free with a Texas State Parks Pass. Visitors are encouraged to bring water and sunscreen. Tickets can be reserved online in advance or purchased at the Fort Leaton or Barton Warnock Visitor Centers.
