Fort Davis
It was a tough decision, but the selection committee for the annual Friends of the Jeff Davis County Library Scholarship chose a total of four awards through a matching gift from the Kay Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund. Three recipients are from the Fort Davis High School and one is a home-schooled Fort Davis resident; there were no graduating seniors from Valentine this year.
Maisie Corbin was awarded $4,000 to attend El Paso Community College with the goal of receiving an A.A.S. in psychology that will lead to a B.A. with a major in psychology/early child development to work with autistic children.
Justin Trussell also received $4,000 to pursue a career in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning with Hussman Refrigeration. He would like to eventually own his own business. He is enrolled at Lincoln Technical School in Grand Prairie and was inspired by his brother’s work ethic as an HVAC tech.
Class valedictorian Elsa Damm has been accepted to University of Texas at Austin to study for a B.A. in public policy, political science and economics. She “credits debate class for learning about real-world problems and feasible solutions.” Her $2,000 award will help her pave the future toward a masters degree.
The single home-schooled senior, Violet Sagers of Fort Davis, plans to register at the College of Cosmetology in Lubbock and will use her $2,000 scholarship toward expenses.
The Friends of the Library scholarship program was launched in 2006 by then president Nancy Robinson to encourage area seniors to engage in higher education. In its 21st year, the Friends have given over $55,000 to high school graduates, based on their personal essays, letters of recommendation, and volunteer work in the community.
